Recycling remains the easiest way for most of us to have a significant daily impact on the environment. Reduced energy use from recycling can have substantial impacts on greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and protects our natural resources. Yet, sadly, our national recycling rates show that there's much more we can – and should – be doing.
On November 15th, we will celebrate America Recycles Day with nearly 2,000 recycling events kicking-off nationwide. These events will range from recycling drives and collections to community education events to "buy recycled" promotions.
Established 12 years ago, America Recycles Day is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle daily and to buy recycled products that "complete the loop" by creating markets for recycled materials. This year, we are thrilled to have Nestlé Waters North America, the parent company of our recycling partner re-source natural spring, as a national sponsor to help us increase awareness of this initiative.
Through this annual event, millions of people become better informed about the importance of daily recycling and buying recycled products. The larger purpose of the day is to continue promoting the social, environmental and economic benefits of recycling and encourage more people to join the movement toward creating a better natural environment.
America Recycles Day is the perfect opportunity to reflect on your own recycling habits and commit to making a difference. If you're the kind of person who always recycles, take the opportunity to remind someone who doesn't. If you're a "sometimes recycler," commit to being an "always recycler." Getting involved is easy. Visit www.americarecyclesday.org, where you can:
· Take a pledge to improve your recycling habits and spread the word to others
· Find a recycling event in your community
· Create your own recycling event using ideas and tips for individuals, schools, businesses and community organizations
And while we celebrate America Recycles Day on November 15th, let's not forget that recycling should be a 24/7, 365-day per year proposition. That's the message we want everyone to take home to their families, their workplace, their neighbors and their elected officials.
